The Morgue Attendant works in the Histology Department and assists in maintaining the morgue and utility room clean and in an orderly condition. The position is responsible for assisting in autopsies including the evisceration, dissection and preparation of cadavers. Responsibilities: A day in the life of a Morgue Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Assists the pathologist with the performance of autopsies including tasks of evisceration and dissection of cadavers and also the preparation of cadavers (cleansing and closing) for release to the funeral home.
  • Responds to code 2s between 8AM and 4:30PM.
  • Releases cadavers to the funeral home according to established procedure.
  • Stocks the morgue with the appropriate items from the laundry room.
  • Maintains morgue in neat and orderly condition and is responsible for cleaning all equipment (instruments, scales, tables, etc.) after autopsies.
  • Assists with the storing and disposing of surgical and autopsy tissue specimens.
  • Transports tissue waste daily from Histology to the Morgue and releases waste to the waste disposal company.
  • Obtains all supplies necessary for Histology Section, i.e., alcohol, paraffin, xylene, etc.
  • Transports specimens from the laboratory accessioning area to grossing area as required.
  • Maintains the frozen section rooms in a neat and orderly condition and stocks room with necessary supplies and records temperature of Kryostat and refrigerators.
  • Maintains utility room in a clean and orderly condition and clean glassware for the laboratory on a daily basis.
  • Develops x-rays on selected specimens.
  • Operates xylene recycler and records maintenance tasks.
  • Assists with the rotating of solutions in the tissue processors when instructed.
  • Assists in filing slides and paraffin blocks for the Anatomic Pathology section.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications: Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Diener or mortuary experience.
